Debrief of My Dark Vanessa - Part I

My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell is a challenging novel of a 15-year-old who ends up in a sexual relationship with her 42-year-old teacher. As the reader, you witness the impacts of this relationship on Vanessa's health and well-being. You see the master manipulation of the teacher. I'd call it sexual interference - the teacher's behaviour and actions severely interfere with the youth's growth and development into adulthood.

After finishing such a heavy read, I needed to debrief. Keri Isham, from Power Up Education, stepped up. We look at various examples of the transfer of responsibility by the offender to the victim, pointing to the teacher's grooming and manipulative behaviours, typical strategies offenders use to create a "willing victim".

This episode is part one of our conversation.
